God’s Own Seeds

December 4, 2022

Isaiah 11:1-10 | Romans 15:4-13 | Matthew 3:1-12

“Righteousness ” or “righteously” occurs six times in today’s readings and is referenced throughout the texts. The concept grabbed my attention and allowed me to skip over John the Baptist, whom I will happily leave for the pros.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth – Isaiah 11: 3-4

Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son that he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice – Psalm 72: 1-2

Righteous: acting in accordance with divine or moral law

Hmmmm…..

Along the road of eighty years of life
My selfish way of greed has raised its head
Too often dominating, causing strife,
And brought not joy and hope, but grief instead.
When thoughts are centered on myself alone,
Self-righteousness becomes the striving force.
My own authority will set the tone
And leave me only feelings of remorse.
But if with righteousness I turn my deeds
And focus not on what I’ve gained or lost,
My actions then become as God’s own seeds
And grow with love wherever they are tossed.
When righteousness and justice fill my soul.
My life, once shattered, is again made whole.
