Communication is a choice

Amos 7:1-10| Psalm 26|Revelation 1:9-16|Matthew 22:34-46

“…and his face was like the sun shining with full force.”

The readings today have such a richness of language it got me thinking about communication.  How do we communicate with others around us?  From a simple ‘hello’ to deep and meaningful conversations, how do we build and maintain connections to others?

In today’s psalms we hear the measured rhythm as David reaches out directly to God, voicing praise and petitions in a very personal form of communication.  The reading from Matthew jumps out as one of the most familiar passages in the Gospel.  The Pharisees question Jesus and he replies without hesitation that the greatest commandment is, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart”, followed quickly by “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  His clear and direct communication underscores the importance of the message.  In Revelation, John attempts to translate an extraordinary vision, beyond human perception.  The language he uses is powerful, so evocative, that even if the meaning is elusive, the image of Christ springs readily to mind, his face ‘the sun shining with full force’.

In these three passages together, we feel the poetry of David, the wisdom of Christ, the mysticism of John.  As we move through this season of Advent may we be thoughtful in our own communications with loved ones, friends, and our world of ‘neighbors’, reflecting the warmth of that shining sun.
