The goodness and majesty of God.

Psalm 147:1-12 | Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26 | Matthew 9:35 — 10:1,5-8

As a teenager I often felt that many Bible readings were harsh and frightening. However, over time, I discovered inspiring thoughts within it that speak to the goodness and majesty of God.

One of those thoughts is found in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk in the shadow of death, I shall not fear for you are with me.” A second thought is in a reading for this week. Psalm 147:11. It reminds us that “The Lord takes pleasure in those who hope in His steadfast love.”

Psalm 23 is assuring because it reminds us that God’s steadfast love is always with us and that God wants the best for all of us. Truly, it may not feel that way when a friend dies, when we’re sick and unable to fend for ourselves or when we witness so much sadness in this world. Such happenings can make it tempting to question God’s goodness and faithfulness. Nevertheless, because this love is steadfast, God is always with us—and always caring for us. Our job is to remain faithful in our trust and belief in God’s love…“The Lord takes pleasure in those who hope in His steadfast love.”  Psalm 147:11
