Seen By God

December 2, 2022

Isaiah 3:8-15 | 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 | Luke 20:41-21:4

The story of the widow’s mite is about giving all that you have even when you have little to give. It is also about the idea that Jesus sees what humankind often overlooks. This woman, a poor widow who is clearly invisible in a crowded synagogue, puts all that she has into the collection box while passing through the gates. It is a sum that is equal to a penny, and it doesn’t even make a sound…and Jesus notices. He makes a profound comment to his disciples. “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-all she had to live on.”

Whether we are small and quiet in the crowd or strong and mighty…Jesus notices us and smiles upon us with his grace and love. Our giving may take on the form of a smile, a kind word, or in the widow’s case, two mites. Our giving may be grand in scale, a large much needed and appreciated monetary donation, consistent time in our church’s garden weeding and planting, feeding the poor, or fixing a pesky leaky sink in the parish men’s room; Jesus knows us, smiles upon us and see’s what is in our heart.

We are taught to believe that God takes care of our needs. This does not mean that our earthly needs will appear out of thin air, although sometimes this miracle does happen. All that we truly need is to be seen and loved by God. We are consistently reminded and reassured of this. This is God’s promise to us. What a gift.
