Life’s Cornerstones

December 21, 2022

Isaiah 28:9-22 | Revelation 21:9-21 | Luke 1:26-38

Therefore thus says the Lord God, See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: ‘One who trusts will not panic.’

– from Isaiah 28: 9-22

Do you ever look at the old stone walls and foundations that dot the landscape, and wonder how long ago they were built?  When I walk by these remnants, I often think about what it was like to live as a settler in chilly New England, no running water, warmed only by firewood. People must have had great resilience to endure winters within those stone walls.

A physical cornerstone, when properly set, ensures the foundation of a building that will last for years, but what cornerstones provide the foundation to support resilient people? to build strong and enduring relationships? We need our own personal cornerstones, meaningful for the structure they provide in our daily lives.

In this season of Advent, we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, the ‘sure foundation’ of the Christian faith. We are asked to enact his lessons of love, charity and acceptance, lessons as valuable today as they were when he first taught them.  Our shared faith is one precious and enduring cornerstone on which we can rely. As we continue our journey through Christmas, let us take time to reflect and be grateful for our own personal cornerstones. What people, places, actions have formed the solid foundation for your meaningful life?
