Can you hear it?
March 23, 2026

Susanna 1-9, 15-29, 34-40, 41-62 | John 8:1-11 | Pslm 23
We are coming to the end of our Lenten journey. Daily we have experienced a deeper conversation with God. Our scriptures for today revolve around the stories of two women who have been accused of adultery (punishable by death). Accused by a group of people, judgements were made based on human parameters and desires. Enter two men of God who intervene to remind us to seek God’s judgement, not our own, listening to God’s voice, not the mob around us.
Here we are, in 2026, surrounded daily by social media, decisions of judgement by angry people on issues of violence, laws, ethnicity. Who are we listening to? In the midst of the mob, is God’s still small voice heard? God calls us to hear his voice, to listen to his word, to understand that judgement is God’s alone. None of us can throw the first stone, for we have all fallen short, sinned, and made bad decisions.
God calls us to listen, to listen deeply to his voice…
- A voice of love
- A voice of grace
- A voice of forgiveness
- A voice of healing
- A voice of peace
And in the words of Psalm 23, God shows us how, if we follow, God will always be there to guard, to guide, to protect, to calm, no matter what occurs to or around us.
I think we humans have an expectation of hearing God’s voice as similar to a “mountaintop” transfiguration moment and we miss the quiet nudge, the thought that just won’t go away, the visual that replays in our mind calling us to pray, to search scripture, to welcome God in even the little decisions in our lives on a daily basis. God speaks to each of us in a way that we will know. For Jesus’ disciples it was in the eating of fish on the beach, for Mary it was just speaking her name, Moses required a burning bush, Elijah hid from it, Zechariah was stuck dumb for not believing it. God calls us in ways we can receive. Can you hear it?
As we approach Holy Week, may we experience God’s voice with ears open to hear, eyes open to see, hearts open to receive the word of God, the love of God. May we respond to God’s call to us to love others and leave the “judgement” to God.
