The Incredible Faith of a Young Couple

Jeremiah 31:15-17 | Psalm 124 |Revelation 21:1-7 | Matthew 2:13-18

The First Sunday after Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family, is an important celebration in the Christian Church. However, I can hardly imagine the difficulties this young family faced when moving from their home to escape Herod’s fear of loosing his power upon the birth of Christ.

Mary, a young woman who had recently given birth, and Joseph, her caring husband, had not likely planned to make such a trip in the cold dark night. However, the message of Herod seeking to kill Jesus forced their decision. Although probably not an appealing decision, it speaks to their depth of perception, acceptance and faith in God’s word by both Mary & Joseph. Clearly it was not likely their first wish, but Mary understood that Joseph had heard the word of God and acted upon it immediately.

As I sit here in the comfort of my home, I wonder if I would have responded so quickly or maybe thought, “We can at least wait until morning”, “Why do we have to go so far”, or Why does life have to be so difficult?” I can’t answer those questions, but I hope I would hear the Word of God and do as I am asked.
