God’s Mercy
March 17, 2024
Jeremiah 31:31-34 | Hebrews 5:5-10 | John 12:20-33 | Psalm 51:1-13
”Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness;… “
What is mercy? I’ve seen several explanations for this word. Some indicate that one is shown forgiveness or mercy instead of being punished for whatever he/she has done.
Other explanations tell us that being merciful means to be compassionate… feed the hungry, give drink to those who are thirsty, provide clothing to those that have none or little, offer forgiveness, etc. Compassion is an attempt to relieve others of their problems or concerns.
Forgiveness and compassion… aren’t they what we hope for from God?
Forgiveness – for the things we have done innocently or know we should not have done… for our thoughts that have been cruel or judgmental… for words that have been hurtful or misunderstood…
Compassion – to help us feel relief from the burdens we bear, no matter what form they take.
This is what God offers through His love and mercy for each of us… His children.
