Find him in our suffering and accept the love and grace he provides.

People who have suffered loss or trauma often refer to the event as having tested their faith. A question many people ask upon learning of a tragedy or injustice is, “How could God let that happen?” I think that is a natural reaction, but I don’t believe God directs who gets cancer or who is injured in an accident. God doesn’t send hardships to us to test our faith. But hardships do test our faith. It is how hardships affect our relationship with God that tests our faith.

In our fear or grief or sadness, we can lose sight of God. In the wilderness of our suffering, it is all too easy to give up on God, feeling that he has given up on us. But God has not given up on us. God is not hiding from us; he is not even passively waiting for us. He is there with us, even in those darkest of places, actively seeking us out. The test of our faith is whether we can find him in our suffering and accept the love and grace he provides.
