Work with God as our partner

Jeremiah 18:1–11,18–20 | Matthew 20:17–28 | Psalm 31:9–16

Lent is a time to reflect on what God needs of us. Loving God above all things is the basis of our faith. We should love and take care of our friends. We also have to love ourselves. That isn’t always easy. Psalm 31 talks about the trouble, sorrow and grief in life and how fear is all around us. It then says to trust in the Lord and he will rescue us from our enemies.

In Jeremiah he talks about a potter making a vessel out of clay. It didn’t come out the way he planned it so he reworked the clay into another vessel that suited him. We have the ability to remake ourselves. The Lord wants us to turn from our “evil” ways and amend what we are doing. Trust in the Lord. His loving ways will help save us.

It seems to me that for us to be “our best selves” we need to work with God as our partner. He is there to save us, but we must also take the responsibility to be the best person we can be. We will make mistakes, get angry, be depressed and be unkind to others. We need to be strong enough to acknowledge our mistakes, apologize to those we’ve hurt and “rework our clay” so we can remake ourselves into a better person. Trust in the Lord and in yourself!
