"We provide food and clothing and promote dignity to our brothers and sisters in need."|
You have heard about it and read about it, but what is this ministry all about? MLF provides our parish family a way to live into our call as followers of Christ to reach out to those in need. With our catering truck loaded down with basic foods and basic clothing we will venture out to provide to the homeless and working poor. This effort will feed and clothe them, but truly will nourish us.
What is needed? Each run we will feed approximately 150 men, women and children on the streets and in the shelters of Woonsocket. We will stock the truck with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, chips, hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, hard-boiled eggs, cookies and cheese sticks. We will also have an assortment of sturdy, clean clothing and other supplies for distribution. People have already begun gathering the supplies for this effort, but more help is needed.
How can I help? This is the most exciting thing about this ministry. While the entire project will last from 10:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M., you don't have to dedicate all of that time. People are needed to help make sandwiches, donate fruit, drinks and other foods, help load the truck, etc. If Saturday is a bad day, you can bake cookies and bag them or hard boil a dozen or more eggs for the trip. Bring a case of water or a bag of candy to St. Luke's. No one is called to do it all, just do a little- you will make a difference.
What kind of difference can this make? In its first year of participation, St. Luke's has made 12 runs to Woonsocket. There we have served an average of 140-150 people, some homeless living in Social Park, others living in the Woonsocket Family Shelter and members of the "working poor" who gather at River Methodist Church. St. Luke's has also begun a second ministry to Harrrington Hall in Cranston. One Tuesday evening per month, we provide a hot meal and basic clothing and toiletries to the 100 men who stay each night at this emergency shelter.
This sound GREAT- how do I sign up? Before each run we will establish a sign-up website to help you join the fun. Simply go to www.SignUpGenius.com/go/4090E4BABA72CA31-mobile There you will be able to sign up for the tasks and supplies needed to fulfill our mission. If you have any problem with the siteÖ donít give up, just e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 885-2844.
"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
